September Services
Sunday services begin at 10:15
a.m. and typically finish by 11:15. Children's religious
education classes
take place at the same time. Child care for infants and
toddlers begins at 9:00 for anyone who needs to be at church early.
After services, a coffee hour is held downstairs in the vestry.
September 12, 10:15 and 7:00 p.m.
In Gathering Celebration
We will celebrate the opening of our new church year. It will be an intergenerational service. Instead of a sermon, we will enjoy our annual water ceremony. Members and friends will place water in a central bowl and share where they brought the water from. Then we will use the water to bless one another and our wonderful community. The morning service will also include a brief marking of the Jewish High Holy Days. The 7pm evening service will focus on the High Holy Days and the work of reconciliation and forgiveness in our lives.
September 19, 10:15 and 7:00 p.m.
Finding the Sacred in the Ordinary
We tend to think that something “big” needs to happen for us to have a “spiritual” experience. In truth, it is the little things of life that can bring us the greatest joy. Whether a particular day is easy or difficult, by focusing on the gift of the moment (however humble) we can rediscover the wonder of being alive – again and again. The 7pm evening service will include the same sermon and meditation but will allow for sharing from the participants about how they find the sacred in the ordinary.
September 26, 10:15 and 7:00 p.m.
Immigration
We will explore one the hottest moral topics in our world today: immigration. We will focus on the moral and spiritual questions raised by the topic and how we can make a difference. Participating in the service will be UCS member Ellen Davis Fleming (a lawyer who has worked on this issue for years), Ananda Robinson (who is completing her Doctoral Dissertation at Harvard Divinity school specifically on the moral questions being experienced at the Arizona – Mexico border), and Patricia Montes, Director of Centro Presente (one of New England’s leading social justice centers working of immigrant rights and respect). The 7pm evening service will cover the same subject but will allow for a lengthy period of discussion on the subject and its many aspects and angles.
